The verdict

Would we buy again?

YES — AT FULL PRICE

There are $90 grinders, $200 grinders, and $1,500 grinders. We brewed side-by-side on all three and the Fellow Opus is the first sub-$300 grinder that legitimately belongs in the same conversation as the Baratza Forte and Eureka Mignon.

The secret is the 40mm conical burrs: they produce a grind distribution tight enough for espresso but cheap enough to ship in a $200 machine. Owen pulled nine cappuccinos off it before calling it — 'I don't need to keep testing, this is the one.'

For pour-over, V60, and French press, it's overkill. For espresso, it's the price floor we'd pay without hesitation.

What worked
  • Consistent grind size — even at espresso fine, almost no fines
  • Stepless adjustment that doesn't drift
  • Quiet enough to grind at 6am without waking the whole apartment
What didn't
  • Static cling on the catch cup — a drop of water on beans fixes it
  • Single-dose only. Not a hopper-grinder.
